NIKO KORONIS

CREATOR OF “SMALL ARCHITECTURAL ENTITIES”

Italie – Milan

© NIKO KORONIS

Niko Koronis was born in 1973 in Thessaloniki, Greece. He left Greece to explore and study architecture at the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff. After architecture, he moved on to design at the Domus Academy in Milan, Italy, where he later taught for a year. He returned to the UK for his doctorate at the Architectural Association. This was followed by a fellowship at the venerable Central Saint Martins and a research post at the Alvar Aalto Foundation in Helsinki. A life as a theorist, researcher and designer, who never ceases to evoke architecture through his work.

Now based in the capital of Lombardy, Niko Koronis specialises in the design of minimalist yet expressive furniture with a very distinctive identity. With an emphasis on geometric silhouettes, our artist favours long, delicate production processes. The aim? To create “small architectural entities”. Among the most notable is CCH. A highly theatrical coffee table composed of two half-cylinders superimposed one on top of the other, crafted in elegant black marble from Belgium. Among the other splendid coffee tables in his repertoire is SCA, a staircase of two movements, composed of some forty sheets of aluminium. As for the surprising SFL, also in marble, designed in a single block, it evokes a flayed sheet of paper. Finally, the dramatic TSL suggests a mineral block with dry, straight edges, straight out of an organic matrix, reminiscent of wood.

In addition to these dark-toned creations, the Greek designer has also explored the world of colour, not through marble, but through resin. Proof of this is the GST side table, dressed in vibrant water green, and the GBC bench, with its surprising frosted red.

These are creatively powerful pieces that challenge the codes of design and architecture. Simply fascinating.
