THE WRECK OF HOPE
France – Paris
The Wreck of Hope is a monumental 7-meter-long drawing by Tacita Dean in chalk on a blackboard, depicting a thousand-year-old glacier.
Emerging like a monster from the darkness, this vessel of ice seems ready to engulf us or set us adrift, at once powerful and vulnerable, imposing and majestic “giant from the depths of the ages” and fragile wreck promised to disappear.
A contrast magnificently rendered by the use of chalk, an erasable and volatile substance… Evoking the sequence of shots used in the films of the British artist (born in Canterbury in 1965), this bravura piece, as much in terms of the virtuosity of the line as its scale, draws us in and draws us into a physical experience of the work, which seems almost to move before our eyes to crush or suck us in.
As we move towards it, we have the impression of shrinking and melting into the mass… A hypnotic experience that speaks volumes about the scope and plastic power of this pulverulent work…
