SUGAR BEACH, THE GATSBY OF MAURITIUS

Nestled in resplendent gardens on the shores of the mythical beach of Flic-en-Flac, a former fishing village that has retained all its authenticity and charm of yesteryear, the Sugar Beach Hotel transports you into a colonial-style ambience of elegance and exoticism.

From the moment you step inside, you’ll be captivated by the huge banyan tree in the centre of the entrance, inhabited by thousands of birds that welcome you with their magical songs.

A manor-like central building evokes the charm of the Roaring Twenties, while the rooms and villas scattered throughout the estate will appeal to visitors who prefer more discretion. The hotel boasts a number of small, verdant, colourful gardens, with bougainvillea and palms providing intimate spaces.

Just a stone’s throw from the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean, diving enthusiasts will be delighted to discover a coral reef of extraordinary beauty. The hotel group is involved in coral conservation and protection in collaboration with the University of Mauritius and Dr David Vaughan of the “Plant a million coral” Foundation. The latter uses a technique of coral multiplication by fragmentation, carries out in-depth research into the health of coral reefs, restores damaged corals and raises awareness of marine biodiversity among local communities.

In fact, you can carry out discovery days with one of the biologists and admire the techniques engaged directly on the coral reef in the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

Another way to discover the magic of this mysterious oasis and become aware of its fragile beauty.

For golf enthusiasts, the hotel can organise a day trip to Ile aux Cerfs, a private, uninhabited 100-hectare stretch of land surrounded by translucent water.

It is home to one of the world’s most prestigious golf courses, as well as a number of culinary addresses offering typical dishes right on the beach.

At Sugar Beach, you can try your hand at croquet, where a tournament is held every year on the hotel’s large lawns facing the ocean. You can learn the rules of this game, invented by the English around 1860, in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. After your games, you’ll be invited to enjoy local tea, homemade lemonades and the fabulous sweet dishes created by Executive Pastry Chef Sandy Sciolli, who has worked in the kitchens of Bernard Loiseau, where she was pastry chef at his 3-Michelin-macaroon restaurant.

If you come across her, don’t hesitate to ask: you’ll be enchanted by her story and her love of pastry.

Finally, for the night owls, this address also lights up at night with traditional and contemporary sounds to experience the magic worthy of Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “Gatsby, the Magnificent”.
