Vincent Ferrané, the essence of being

Le photographe, installé à Paris, sonde l’intime et le quotidien, l’humain et les fragments de corps, l’intériorité et les intérieurs, dans une réinterprétation constante du réel mêlant sensibilité et symbolisme.

The Paris-based photographer probes the intimate and the everyday, the human and the fragment of the body, the interior and interiors in a constant reinterpretation of reality between sensitivity and symbolism.

Vincent Ferrané’s visual language is immediately appealing. Not just by what he shows in his images, but by what they signify. This Bristolian virtuoso initially studied science to become a dental surgeon, before changing his career path in the mid-2000s. Since then, the man who is celebrating his fiftieth birthday this year has forged a career that is both discrete and remarkable, producing reports for the magazine press (The New Yorker, Libération, Le Monde, Les Inrocks, Télérama). His personal work is as rich as his editorial commissions.

Vincent Ferrané’s in-depth research into the human, the intimate, the everyday and the vicissitudes of life has resulted in several books, published by Libraryman: Milky Way (portraits of his partner Armelle breastfeeding their child), Every-Day (transgender or non-binary people, unclassified and unmentioned), Iconography, XXV figures of Jeanne Damas (study of beauty standards and aesthetic canons) and Visitor (women artists at work in their studio).

Embodied Experiences

In his most recent work, Vincent Ferrané signs his new photographic essay, Inner, which immerses us in his Paris apartment at the moment of confinement. Here again, his intimate shots of domestic life and his partner explore the body in motion, both clothed and unclothed. “Looking at these images made up of fragments of a body, a face and everyday gestures that a permanent sun cuts out and includes in a room of a living space, we understand that it’s a question of the interior, of interiority and intimacy that can be shared with someone,” he explains.

With his Embbeded series, he puts his talents at the service of Amour Hotels, which develops projects with the creative world. In 2023, the hotel chain launched a series of residencies on the theme: looking at the city, the body and the horizon. In collaboration with performer Pauline Lavogez, Vincent Ferrané gives his increasingly singular vision within the confined space of a bed, transformed into a minimalist, performative stage. “The arts of the ephemeral, choreographic performance and photographic thought converge here to invent notations in which time is both subject and material, revealing itself as an embodiment of the body in motion.”
