Represented in France by Galerie-B, which showed his work last month at the Singapore Fair, Fu Site is one of the most talented artists of his generation. Born in China in 1984 and living in France since 2006, this virtuoso painter invents improbable worlds populated by chimeras, deformed creatures and tattered bodies in pastel colours. A fantastic universe of a new kind deployed in the most disturbing bottomless spaces.

The shapes and spaces transgress the laws of anatomy, perspective and gravity: decaying or atomised forms and floating spaces where everything seems to distort. Evoking Yves Tanguy’s surreal desert landscapes populated by ectoplasmic floating forms, Salvador Dali’s atomised figures, Francis Bacon’s flaccid, convulsive flesh and François Lunven’s bony explosions, his paintings plunge us into unfathomable worlds populated by indeterminate creatures.

Disaggregation

Shreds swirling like petals (Circle and Ascending Path, 2022), fragmented or deliquescent bodies (Nude, 2021), heterogeneous assemblages, dances of swirls, blotches and tangles of lines…: everything here conspires to lose us. As in fairy tales, we are invited to penetrate the depths of an unreal universe of pastel colours with no spatial limits and no vanishing point, out of time, where everything seems to float and to be able to disappear. A dreamlike universe populated by gnomes and chimeras, pink horses and bodiless trognes, animals and distorted human figures, as if fluctuating or unfinished. Sometimes grotesque, sometimes spectral (Woman and Dark Figure, 2021), these enigmatic creatures evolve in unfathomable spaces. Incoherent spaces (devoid of foreground and background) that they inhabit without really seeming to belong.

Transitional Forms

Fu Site’s “ambivalent transitional visions “1 are sometimes “collages” of unidentifiable organic forms, evoking the exquisite cadavers of the Surrealists or some science-fiction film depicting the metamorphosis or disintegration of bodies. A master of indeterminacy, the artist seems to want to show the process of transformation of bodies or bodies in gestation, whose embryonic forms he does not hesitate to merge, while mixing figurative and abstract writing in a vertiginous maelstrom.

Depriving his scenes of any logical coherence, Fu Site plays with spatiotemporal ambiguity with chilling virtuosity. In a new approach to figuration, he elaborates disruptive fables, narratives “in the making”, giving us a glimpse of reality devoured by the virtual.
