Founded in 1663 in the Biella Valley, Vitale Barberis Canonico embodies the very essence of Italian textiles. Combining centuries-old heritage, a passion for menswear, and sustainable innovation, it continues to captivate tailors and designers worldwide. Acumen delves into the heart of this family saga.

Each thread, a memory

In Italy, some names seem woven into the very fabric of the landscape. In Pratrivero, a small village in Piedmont nestled against the Alps, the murmur of water mingles with the hum of looms. It is here that, for more than three centuries, the Barberis Canonico family has been crafting its fabrics, blending merino wool, meticulous craftsmanship, and timeless elegance.

Vitale Barberis Canonico is not just a company: it's a living legend. Founded in 1663, recognized by the Dukes of Savoy, and a member of the Henokiens, this family mill belongs to the very exclusive circle of century-old houses—those that have survived wars, industrial revolutions, and cultural upheavals without ever abandoning the art of weaving. Their history, meticulously preserved in visual and documentary archives, reflects a fascination with the great names of elegance—from Lord George Stanhope, 6th Earl of Chesterfield, to Natty Rothschild, by way of the Stroganoffs and Prince Galitzine. They all shared one thing in common: a passion for fine fabrics and a mastery of sartorial language.

Elegance as transmission

In the hushed corridors of the company, the memory of Alberto Barberis Canonico, who passed away in April 2025, is still spoken of with respect. A rigorous engineer and discreet strategist, he guided the company toward industrial excellence without ever betraying its artisanal spirit. His vision: to maintain a fully integrated production chain, from the selection of raw fibers to the finishing of the fabric, to guarantee quality, traceability, and style.

Under the leadership of the new generation – Alessandro, Francesco, and Lucia – the house continues its ascent. Each season, the collections perpetuate the taste for detail: airy flannels, caressing Super 150s, and stretch twills with crisp lines. Their names – Revenge, perennial, 21 Micron – resonate like promises made to the fabrics of tomorrow. We find in their approach a deep understanding of what fabric tells us, like a “language of textiles” – the one that the dandies of the 19th century and the aesthetes of the 20th knew how to read in the grain of a flannel or the drape of a twill.

Thinking about clothing from the inside out

At Vitale Barberis Canonico, elegance is never just an appearance. It is also a philosophy. For several years, the company has placed sustainability at the heart of its business. Natural materials, short supply chains, recycling of production water: the Pratrivero factory has become a model of textile ecology. It follows a manufacturing process in seven fundamental steps – from the meticulous selection of Australian wool to dyeing, including carding, spinning, weaving, finishing and quality control. Each meter of fabric is the result of slow and controlled expertise, where nothing is left to chance.

Project making itLaunched in partnership with the Campaign for Wool, this initiative perfectly embodies this desire to pass on knowledge. It's a creative laboratory where young tailors are invited to reinterpret the house's fabrics, while simultaneously telling the story and conveying the values inherent in each length. It's a way of reminding us that clothing, far from being merely decorative, is an act of remembrance and commitment.

An art of transformation in seven stages

In the heart of Pratrivero, elegance is born from a seven-step ritual, observed like a musical score. It all begins with washing, a foundational step where water purifies the freshly shorn wool, removing the last impurities from the raw material. Next comes carding, or sometimes combing, which arranges the fibers and creates the top, that perfect ribbon ready to be spun. During spinning, this top is stretched, twisted, and sometimes plied again to become a strong and precious yarn. This yarn is then dyed with extreme precision – whether it's yarn or piece dyeing, each shade is compared to the reference sample, guaranteeing the desired intensity. Warping then lays the foundation of the fabric, organizing the warp of yarns with geometric accuracy. Finally, weaving orchestrates the interlacing of the warp and weft at millimeter speed, under the digital eye of the loom. Everything culminates in the hushed silence of the finishing stage: where the fabric acquires a patina, thickens, and reveals its true character. The cloth passes through the expert hands of the weavers, is fulled, dewashed, pressed, and refined. Only at the end of this patient and controlled process is a textile worthy of bearing the name Vitale Barberis Canonico born – a fabric that is not only beautiful, but imbued with life.

The finishing touches

Style, version 2026

For the Spring/Summer 2026 season, the house presents a collection that plays with light. Mineral hues—tobacco, pearl, warm sand—are complemented by breathable textures, designed for a new generation of men on the go. Fluid yet structured fabrics that hug the body without ever restricting it. Suits that adapt to the city, to travel, to minimalist style.

The house's textile research also draws inspiration from historical archives, revealing the art of correspondence, labels, letterheads, and personalized stationery: so many forgotten details, subtly revived in current collections. For VBC, fabric is not a surface: it is a memory, a code, a language.
