AN EMOTIONAL JOURNEY BETWEEN FASHION AND ART AT MOMU

The exhibition "ECHO. Wrapped in Memory" offers an emotional and tactile exploration at the Fashion Museum in Antwerp, Belgium. A profound reflection that provides an intimate connection between clothing and memory through the lens of three exceptional artists: the artist Louise Bourgeois, the designer Simone Rocha, and the Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.

The MoMu (Fashion Museum) explores the shared connection between these artists from different generations. Over the years, they have each, in their own way, woven memories linked to clothing and textiles into their artistic language. Their creations emerge from a personal space, but their effects extend beyond the individual to touch many facets of the human experience.

Through her pieces, Louise Bourgeois evokes the emotional connection she has with her clothes, highlighting the evocative power of the past materialized in each preserved garment, while Simone Rocha anticipates a dialogue between the works, exploring sculpture, fabric, movement, emotion and clothing.

The exhibition thus looks at memories of childhood, motherhood, aging and nostalgia, while exploring manual work and repair, as well as physical and emotional memories linked to clothing.

“ECHO. Wrapped in Memory” also highlights a little-known aspect of the MoMu collection, underscoring the expert work of the curators. With over 38,000 objects, the collection offers curators and researchers access to echoes of numerous personal events and stories. The garments featured in the exhibition bear the marks of time, with smells, stains, and tears, thus revealing rich and varied histories.

Featuring works by Louise Bourgeois, Simone Rocha, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and other artists, “ECHO. Wrapped in Memory” offers a look at the intersection of art, fashion and dance, weaving together memories that resonate beyond the limits of time.
