The London-based American photographer and director energetically and magnetically re-examines traditional conventions, concepts, and stereotypes of beauty.

Jordan Hemingway's work encompasses a wide range of artistic exploration, from fine art to grainy celluloid film. This former amateur skateboarder, originally from New Jersey and now based in London, has built a career as a photographer entirely on his own. It was following a skateboarding injury that he began photographing his friends and fell in love with the medium.. Since then, his obsession with creating images has intensified in visual narratives that challenge stereotypes of beauty between art and sensitivity, dreamlike and surreal, gothic and fetishistic, authentic and ferocious.

Innovative visions

For Jordan Hemingway, the "notions of gender and sexuality" are encompassed within those of "equality and freedom of expression," but also "being oneself." In his most recent projects, he has written two magnificent editorials for Luncheon et W MagazineThe first is both a tribute to the legendary magazine Selfish by Nicole Wisniak and to the choreographic work Triadic Ballet (1922) by Oskar Schlemmer, a prominent figure of the Bauhaus school. Through this relationship between figure, space, and movement, Jordan Hemingway reappropriates pictorialist, abstract, and surrealist approaches, creating innovative and contemporary images. The second is intended as a "modern visual fantasy," inspired by three French artists and photographers of the second half of the 20th century.e century: Pierre Molinier, Serge Lutens, and Irina Ionesco. Similarly, Hemingway incorporates stylistic allusions into his photographs, which explore bodies and genders. Faces, some made up like masks, are fragmented and multiplied, immersed in dark settings. Or, conversely, portraits against a light background embody the spirit of beauty.

Image creator

In his creative process, Jordan Hemingway develops his prints in his darkroom, spends as little time as possible in front of the computer, and tries not to use Photoshop. He has a plethora of magazines to his credit (Dazed, Vogue, Nownessand brands (Comme des Garçons, Gucci, Make Up For Ever). The new partner of British singer FKA Twigs has also directed fashion films for Raf Simons, album covers (Post Malone), and music videos (Travis Scott, Isamaya Ffrench, Yves Tumor). An ideal platform for this rising star who is giving the fashion world a much-needed jolt.
