As a student at a fashion school, Sassen turned to photography and began training at the Utrecht School of the Arts in the Netherlands. During this transition, she chose to put her first love at the heart of her work. The artist’s photographs are distinguished by their use of shadows, vivid colours and moving female bodies, earning her worldwide recognition.

The photographer’s shots possess a dual quality, at once surreal and whimsical, immersing the viewer in an ethereal reality that seems just out of reach. Sassen poetically captures fragments of life and questions the way we look at the female body, generally represented as an object of male desire in photography.

To coincide with this new exhibition, a book combining photographs and historians’ critiques of Viviane Sassen’s work has been published by Editions Prestel in collaboration with the MEP.
