As heavenly as the Maldives, as mythical as Zanzibar, Mozambique, a former Portuguese colony in southeast Africa, is home to some ultra-luxurious, eco-friendly resorts. For example, Sussurro, with its six canvas bungalows, stands with its feet in the sand, facing a turquoise lagoon dotted with traditional wooden dhows.

The owners, Adam Humphreys and Sarah Birkett, wanted to offer their guests the privilege of intimacy and immersion in the most authentic Africa possible. As a result, all objects and furnishings have been handcrafted by local artisans, with the exception of antiques sourced from all over East Africa.
