ICON OF DESIGN: TOGO CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY

France – Paris

A veritable darling of design history, the Togo, published by Ligne Roset, is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. Launched in 1973, the seat, with its singular silhouette, was initially shunned by professionals and the public alike. This was due to its crumpled appearance; “a toothpaste tube folded on itself like a stovepipe and closed at both ends,” explained its designer, Michel Ducaroy. At the head of the design department of the Roset company, Ducaroy seizes new concepts of seats, born through the rapid evolution of the customs of the time, but also and especially new materials such as wadding, thermoformed plastics. A piece that was quickly seized by the hippie generation, especially for its aspirations to be different. Several decades later, the Togo is the brand’s best seller and is getting a new look for its 50th anniversary.

A new look through two new limited-edition coverings: “Atom” by Kvadrat and “La Toile du Peintre” by Pierre Frey. The first was designed by Belgian fashion designer Raf Simons for Kvadrat. This curly fabric was inspired by the pointillist landscapes of expressionist paintings. As for “The Painter’s Canvas,” it is a reinterpretation of a work by painter Heather Chontos. A version available from the end of March until the end of December 2023.

Also on the occasion of this anniversary, Ligne Roset is integrating into its permanent collections a denim canvas for its Togo made from 49% recycled materials. An initiative that highlights the history of the French publishing house, while fully anchoring it in the concerns of the 21st century.
