The Formafatal studio has pulled off another tour de force with the “Achioté” project, two twin villas available for rent, nestled on a steep hill near the town of Uvita. They seem to float above the jungle. This is the first earthen project in Costa Rica. Both were designed with sustainability and the wilderness environment in mind. “My intention was to design sustainable houses with biophilic interiors,” says Dagmar Štěpánová, architect and founder of Formafatal.

Their minimalist architecture is identical, only the color differentiates them. “Jaspis Villa,” in sandy tones, reflects yin, connected to the ocean and sky. “Nefrit Villa,” in red earth tones, forms the yang, connecting to the ground and the jungle. The studio worked with Terra Compacta, a specialist in rammed earth architecture in Brazil. The walls are designed with this raw material, accompanied by concrete that also composes the furniture (kitchen worktop, sink, shelves, bench, bedside tables).

The set is completed by H-beams in structural steel, while the facades are frameless glass. “I place extreme emphasis on all constructions – architectural details and their mutual constraints,” insists Dagmar Štěpánová. Thus, the villas remain solid and unobtrusive, where a large bedroom sits in the center, opening to an infinity pool, adjacent terraces, lush tropical vegetation, and endless views of the Pacific Ocean.
