MARC NEWSON: BACK TO HIS ROOTS

The Australian designer, based in the UK, is coming to the French capital for an exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery. This avant-garde artist will be presenting a limited-edition furniture collection.

Among the exhibited works, visitors will discover "Cloisonné White and Blue Lounge" and "Cloisonné White and Blue Chair," two pieces that embody Marc Newson's exploration of the concept of form. Adorned with copper edges and blue and white "molecular" motifs, they required the use of the cloisonné technique, often employed in the world of jewelry and goldsmithing—a world from which our designer hails. To bring these two exceptional pieces of furniture to life, Newson enlisted the help of artisans in Beijing. These craftsmen outline the furniture's form using cloisonné with copper wire, before integrating enamel into the precisely drawn patterns. Once this meticulous process is complete, the pieces are fired up to 12 times in vast, custom-built kilns.

Another recent creation by the artist, presented by Gagosian, is "Extruded Ribbon Console," a work sculpted from a single piece of Azul Macaubas granite in shades of sky blue. Dynamic, the piece was conceived as a flat, curvilinear form, designed in three dimensions to define its extruded silhouette.

“Design is about improving things and looking to the future, advancing technology. For me, as a designer, it’s an excellent opportunity to advance what already exists, to simplify, beautify, and improve from a technological point of view.” explains Marc Newson.

A journey into the future not to be missed under any circumstances.
