Two new skyscrapers are going up in the residential neighborhood of Greenpoint in Brooklyn. This is the work of the architectural firm OMA, which is designing its first high-rise project in New York. The design, called Eagle + West, is the result of a collective ambition with Brookfield and Park Tower Group to create “a living platform that connects the past and the future, the indoors and the outdoors, urban life and the waterfront. The two towers (40 and 30 stories) are clad in precast concrete panels and include stacked volumes, giving the appearance of the towers turning towards each other while simultaneously moving away.
The staircase design was implemented because of the limited space of the site and the desire to maximize views of the city that never sleeps. They are accompanied by terraces, which mimic their changing forms, and a seven-story building surrounded by a landscaped park. “The two towers create a constantly changing presence that engages both the neighborhood and the waterfront,” says OMA partner Jason Long. This geographic area, connecting Brooklyn and Queens, is now open to the public in the form of a new plaza and waterfront esplanade. A unique location for residents to both access this growing neighborhood and enjoy an unparalleled perspective of the Manhattan skyline.
