FROM QUARRIES TO CULTURAL SPACES

DnA_Design and Architecture has transformed a series of three quarries in Zhejiang province, taking advantage of their technical characteristics and natural beauty.

One of them, Quarry No. 9, has given birth to a space dedicated to the world of entertainment. Carved out of a rock with orange tones, this old quarry can be seen through a very narrow entrance. This thin slit widens to give way to a rectangular space. In height, the walls form delicate slopes that seem to want to touch each other, forming a pierced roof, letting in natural light.

The walls of this singular place bear witness to the different passages of man. While the lower part was conceived through mechanical excavation, the upper part, with its conical shape, is the result of manual work, thus giving birth to a cathedral-like space, conceived by the purest of coincidences. After various tests, the acoustic qualities were improved by means of the floor covering, panels in the side railings, and sound absorption measures to facilitate versatile use.

A unique venue, ideal for conferences, performances, but also the staging of the traditional Wuju opera, unique to this region.

The ultimate poetry, when the rain comes, the water accumulates and reflects the walls. Slight ripples are reflected on the walls of the space according to the light. A dreamlike time to admire the delicate sound of water drops.
