UMBRELLA HOUSE A NEW HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURE ON THE VITRA CAMPUS

Famous for its extraordinary architectural park, the Vitra Campus inaugurates a third iconic building, the Umbrella House, designed by Japanese architect Kazuo Shinohara. Built in a district of Tokyo in 1961, this masterpiece was acquired by Vitra to preserve it for posterity. Rebuilt identically on campus, the “Umbrella House” is a testament to Shinohara’s early style. A house inspired by the traditional architecture of Japanese private residences and temples. The result is a single-story wooden building with a pyramidal roof and a clean interior. It was an innovative contribution to the architectural revival of Japan in the 1960s, and today inspires the designers of tomorrow.
