Last November, the Italian fashion house Bottega Veneta announced in a press release the departure by mutual agreement of Daniel Lee, who had managed, in just a few years, to give the brand a new lease of life, more modern and minimalist. This departure, which surprise the entire fashion world, was accompanied by a spotlight on the discreet but no less talented Matthieu Blazy. Behind that big hazelnut look is the right-hand man of the former artistic director. Although his name is still unknown to the general public, his career in fashion is nevertheless exemplary.
Houses with an international reputation.
This 37-year-old French-Belgian took his first steps in this world by joining the prestigious La Cambre school in Brussels. From men’s designer for Raf Simons to director of the «Artisanal» line and women’s ready-to-wear shows for Maison Martin Margiela, via Céline and Calvin Klein, Matthieu Blazy has climbed the ladder while finding his own style – precise, graphic and pure. Finally, in 2020, he joined the Bottega Veneta artistic team and was appointed director of ready-to-wear design for the transalpine brand.
Adulated by Kanye West
But the person who really helped him make a name for himself in the industry was the American rapper Kanye West, who fell in love with his creations for Maison Martin Margiela and asked him to design his entire wardrobe for the Yeezus Tour. In total, the artist wore, among other things, ten haute couture outfits and about twenty from the ready-to-wear collections designed by Matthieu Blazy. Leo Rongone, the president and CEO of the Italian brand, says that he is «enthusiastic» about this appointment, but we will have to wait another month before Matthieu Blazy’s first collection is presented.
