From her Initiation Rooms, the white-lacquered meditation chambers with which she made her acclaimed entry into the art world in 1968, to the great white landscapes of her 2019 photographic series Nostalgia, hasn't Tania Mouraud made desolation the bedrock of her protean work?
Desolation of landscapes scarred by industrial agriculture and mining(Balafres, 2014). Desolation of the gaze mired in the murky waters of swamps(Film noir, 2021) or lost between sky and earth in the blurred reflections of nature photographed on the shimmering, crumpled surface of plastic tarpaulins wrapping haystacks(Bordeland, 2007-2010).
The five series presented by Tania Mouraud at the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, as part of the 4e edition of Chaumont-Photo-sur-Loire, bring us face to face with the wounded beauty of the world. Beneath the apparent beauty and almost painterly plasticity of these images lurks the "beauty of the devil".
