Glassmaking gone wild: four designers to watch in 2022

Glassmaking, the art of fire par excellence, has recently captivated a new generation of artists. Whether they work with blown or wax-molded glass, these neo-glassmakers are reinventing the techniques and offering wildly innovative creations. Acumen has brought together four talents who have fallen under the spell of this discipline.

Helle Mardahl

It was a childhood dream for the Danish designer. Helle Mardahl Opening a confectionery shop was her dream. A dream now fulfilled with her glass creations. Like sweet-hued candies, her collections transport us back to childhood. Vases, lamps, bowls, and candy dishes—each piece is crafted from colored blown glass, revealing the charm of its imperfections.

Devyn Ormsby

Her fruits are deceptively realistic. Influenced by the blown-glass plant imitations popular in the 1960s, the American artist Devyn Ormsby It pays homage to them through its "Devon Made" collection. Bananas, lemons, and tangerines are cast using the lost-wax technique, creating a play of contrast between the transparency of the material and the weight of the glass. A highly original approach to the material that tantalizes our senses!

Serena Confalonieri

Her penchant for craftsmanship transforms her transparent creations into true jewels. With the Calypso tableware collection, the designer Serena Confalonieri This collection celebrates the floral world of Art Nouveau. Tinted with delicate colors, this borosilicate glassware series plays with our senses through an ambiguous dialogue between the imaginative forms given to the objects and their function. With its flutes, the Milanese collection promises a lively and festive table setting.

Roos Kalff

With the studio that bears her name, the designer Roos Kalff She envisions a link between past and present. Inspired by Dutch artistic tradition, she infuses her lighting fixtures with a contemporary approach, using vintage glass objects and repurposing their original form and function. This responsible work is further demonstrated by her meticulous handcrafting of each piece in her Amsterdam studio.
