To illustrate the evolution of the world's population, French artist Mathieu Lehanneur has embodied statistics in aluminium statuettes printed in 3D. Called "State of the World", these 140 pieces represent the populations of as many countries. Each stripe corresponds to an age, from 0 to 100, from bottom to top. Mathieu Lehanneur's ability to appreciate the changing demographics of each nation, whether they conceal dramatic or happy events, is immediately apparent. For example, Cambodia's silhouette, marked by the genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge, has a very slender top and a massive base, reminding us that, despite the tragedy the country has been through, the younger generations are more present than ever. The same vitality is to be found on the sculpture of the world's population, which, with its corpulent base, evokes the hope of youth.
