Paris Photo, the must-attend event for the photography market took place from November 11 to 14 at the ephemeral Grand Palais. After two blank years, this 24th edition welcomed over 190 galleries and publishing houses from 30 different countries, as well as numerous conferences and signings.

We're delighted with this new edition after such a long period of silence...

We'd like to take this opportunity to present you with a selection of the artists featured at Paris Photo, whose works have touched us, questioned us or even shaken us up.

IN CAMERA Gallery

Founded in 2008 by Hanane Hilmi and Jean Noël de Soye, the gallery aims to promote photography by contemporary artists.

She has opted for a confrontation between classical aesthetics and more contemporary sensibilities, open to changes in the landscape and the exploration of new margins.

Sissi Farassat's work was of great interest to us. This artist was born in Teheran in 1969, where she spent part of her childhood before moving to Vienna in 1978.

Two cultures that have certainly inspired the artist's work, who adds substance to her photographs with interwoven threads or carpets of sequins, like a graceful and luminous pageantry.

Another artist on the Galerie In Camera stand is Thomas Vandenberghe, whose small, intimate photographs are taken with a compact camera and flash. The artist delivers a kind of diary of his personal life, inspired by desire, love and loss. Torn, scratched, repeated or even cut, his pictures speak to memory.

The need not only to look, but also to come to terms with what has been, and perhaps even more with what could have been - but isn't and never will be.

Gallery L PARKER STEPHENSON

L Parker opened his Madison Avenue gallery in 2009 between the 65e and 66e Streets.

It offers its customers a focused and personal experience. Its reputation is built on knowledge, vision, integrity and trust.

Ne were delighted to welcome back the intense works of artist Jane Evelyn ATWOOD at the 2018 Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles.

Jane Evelyn Atwood is interested in closed communities, formed by trauma and adaptation. In 1978, fascinated by the world of Parisian nightlife, she became interested in transgender people and decided to spend a year living in the heart of the Pigalle district. Intense, committed shots reveal the beauty of these out-of-frame beings.

We were equally enchanted by the photographs of John Cohen, filmmaker, photographer, writer, musician and musicologist. He was involved in the artistic and literary movements developing in New York in the 1950s-1960s. Patti Smith's phrase sums up the multi-disciplinary artist perfectly. The treasures of the earth seem to be inscribed in John Cohen's eyes ".

PERSONS PROJECT Gallery

The gallery was founded in 1995 in Helsinki, Finland, before moving to Berlin in 2005. Persons Projects has two exhibition spaces, one of which is dedicated to artists associated with the Helsinki school, and is intended to function as their main international gallery.

We were intrigued by a photograph by the artist Joakim Eskildsen, a Dane trained in Finland at Aalto University and one of the most published and recognized photographers of the Helsinki school. Image from the "Skagen" series , taken at night, filled with a bluish light that gives it a surrealist quality. A disturbing shot on the borderline between reality and fiction.

Another artist whose creative process touched us deeply was Milja Laurila and her work on the " Untitled Women " series. It all began with the discovery of a book entitled " Woman. An Historical Gynæcological and Anthropological Compendium ", originally published in Germany in 1885, which was one of the most influential texts in the field of sexual science. The work describes female physiology from an anthropological point of view. Hundreds of shots of naked women and children, bodies stripped of their personality, presented as exotic specimens and designated as mere objects. In her work, Laurila seeks to alter the focus of the original photographs and present the women from a different angle. Using translucent paper to conceal the original scientific photography, with the exception of the women's eyes, she shifts the focus from the detailed assessment of female body parts to the eyes and the power of their gaze. "Now they're the ones looking at you. How does it feel to be looked at?"

KAHMANN Gallery

Galerie Kahmann was founded in 2005 by collector and entrepreneur Roy Kahmann. While the initial concept was to focus solely on Dutch vintage photography, the scope has broadened over time to include international photographers and young talent.

We were drawn in by the photographs of artist Justine Tjallinks, inspired by painting from the Golden Age to the realist painters of the 20th century. The artist seeks to capture the uniqueness of individuals and the diversity of human beauty. These works become veritable photographic paintings.
