Christie's annual photography sale will be held on November 9, just before the launch of the 2021 edition of Paris Photo. On this occasion, Acumen revisits three iconic photographs.
Christie's Acumen carefully preserves its finest photographs and puts them up for sale every year at Paris Photo. This gives Acumen the opportunity to revisit the story behind three of these images. emblematic.
It was during the fabulous Swinging London era that David Bailey made a name for himself. When Diana Vreeland spotted his talent and made him a loyal contributor to the magazine VogueHis career took off. Married to Catherine Deneuve in 1965, it was a year later that he created the series "Flamingo," revealing his fondness for birds (he lived with free-roaming parrots). He is one of those memorable fashion photographers, like Peter Lindbergh, to whom we owe the spotlight on the supermodels of the 1990s. In "The Wild Ones," taken in 1991, we see Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Patitz, Helena Christensen, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Karen Mulder, and Stephanie Seymour on an empty Brooklyn street. He presented them without artifice, thus breaking with the style of the time. This photograph stands out as one of the essential works of the photographer, who passed away in 2019. Another famous print is a 1977 self-portrait by the artist Francesca Woodman, "Lucy with Goose," which is very representative of her art, in which she often featured herself. Her untimely death at the age of 23 led to her works achieving true posthumous success.
