Interweaving past and present, reality and fiction, memories and fantasies, Sophie Calle weaves troubling tales with little nothings, vestiges of ordinary life doomed to decay or oblivion. A virtuoso affabulator, the queen of micro-fiction who, from true-false reports to pseudo-true stories, has been luring us for forty years, returns to the origins of this process of mystification which she has made the substratum of all her work. A mythology of intimacy, making traces and abandoned objects into « trophies. » Thus, the small objects, client files, and other documents collected in the deserted hotel at the Orsay train station before its transformation into a museum. That’s where it all began, in 1978. Haunting the deserted rooms for months on end, documenting and transforming the objects found into ready-mades, the visual artist made this desolate land the breeding ground for her imagination and all her future creations. Return on these ghosts.
